Macro reports: South America. August 2017

by AgFlow

AgFlow is making its fourth release of South America, United States and Black Sea exports macro reports for the period between January and June 2017. The reports are built compiling data from Alphamar and NABSA.

These are standard export reports for corn, soybeans and soymeal by month to destinations categorized by geographic areas. AgFlow has benched-marked the exports against customs data and other shipping line-ups to determine that coverage is statistically good to very good.

Corn exports

While total corn exports for Jan-Jun 2017 are essentially unchanged, we note that the US reclaimed its traditional share of the market for this time period with exports up 23% or 6 mln tons versus a year ago. With a big Brazilian corn harvest underway, we expect a significant pick-up in Brazilian exports barring any major logistical bottlenecks.

Lower demand across all major buying destinations for S. American soymeal led by N Europe and the MedBasin has resulted in a 10% decrease of exports for the Jan-Jun 2017 versus year ago. The decrease been equally shared by Argentina and Brazil.

Argentine exports

The Jan-Jun 2017 grain, sunseed complex and soyoil export campaign for Argentina has seen volumes similar to year ago. Soyoil shipments are down some 15% due to the MedBasia and SE Asia. Wheat shipments are up 8% with a noticeable shift from SE Asia to the MedBasin, East Africa and to a lesser extent to the MidEast.
