Mr. Thoenes graduated in 1986 from Göttingen University in Germany with a master’s degree in agricultural economics. His professional career started with a term at the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels, where he worked on Common Agricultural Policy matters. Subsequently, Mr. Thoenes joined IFAD (the U.N.’s Rome-based International Fund for Agricultural Development), where he was involved in project evaluation and policy planning work. Eventually, he joined FAO in Rome, where he has been working for the last 25 years as commodity specialist in the organization’s Trade and Markets Division. After working on various basic foodstuffs, in 1995, Mr. Thoenes started specializing on oilseeds, oils and meals. In 1999, he was appointed Secretary of FAO’s Intergovernmental Group on Oilseeds, Oils and Fats, and became responsible for the organization’s work on global oilseed markets. Mr. Thoenes’ main areas of expertise are (i) market analysis and intelligence work, (ii) research on agricultural and trade policy issues, (iii) commodity R&D projects, and, (iv) medium-term supply and demand projections.
